The Central Government wants the Delhi High Court to recognize same-s*x marriage under the Hindu Marriage Act instead of addressing it as fundamental right. The petition is submitted in the Central Government’s affidavit.

Transgender activist and actress Laxmi Narayan Tripathi, in an interview with BT shared her views on this and said, “Marriage is about the union of two souls, not two genders. We respect the judiciary and accept their decision, but I feel the government has brought many progressive changes in the past and it should consider same-s*x marriage, too. It is important to wait for the Supreme Court’s verdict on this.”

Stressing on the fact that that Section 377 has been decriminalized, she added, “After Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code was decriminalized, the Supreme Court recognized transgender rights, officially making them the third gender. It is important that if two individuals love each other, they should be given the permission to marry and live a happy life.”

Laxmi has a tremendous presence on TV as well and has never shied away from speaking about the rights of transgenders. She has appeared on The Kapil Sharma Show and Sach Ka Samna, she also participated in Bigg Boss 5  and10 Ka Dum. Laxmi holds a postgraduate degree in Bharatnatyam. In 2008, She became the first transgender to represent Asia Pacific in the UN.
