A walk down the memory lane (Chapter 1)

CHAPTER 1

“If you are talking about the intense love you feel for your partner at the beginning of the relationship, let me tell you it lasts no more than 2-3 years. And no more than 7 years at most” said Twinkle. She continued as everyone else starting exchanging looks , “ at some point of time you will encounter hardships and trouble which will definitely affect your mental health”

Everyone else in the room seemed to be shocked by Twinkle’s comment. Why on earth would someone say such things on her sister’s engagement? The blank faces soon turned into those of the judgemental ones. It was as if they were all saying the same thing … “ she is just jealous that her younger sister is getting married before her!” It was as if Twinkle could hear them, It was as if they were screaming right in front of her ears. Unable to stand it any longer she decided to leave the room immediately. She came out of the Taneja Mansion and looked up at the sky. It has always been this way. Right from her early childhood. Twinkle was a person of fewer words but she was also the person who was easily misunderstood. But did she ever complain? No. It was only her and ‘babaji’ who knew about her life struggles and problems in general.

*A DAY BEFORE* (Flashback)

When everyone else in the house were busy prepping for the grand occasion (Mahi’s engagement), twinkle seemed out of focus. “Di, come here and help me select the jewelry” said an excited Mahi. Twinkle didn’t respond. “let me help you beta, she seems lost in her own world. Why bother asking?” said Leela. The extensive use of sarcasm in her voice attracted twinkle’s attention. She looked at her as if she wanted to say something but didn’t.

*BACK TO PRESENT DAY*

Twinkle kept gazing at the stars and didn’t even realize that the groom’s family have arrived. She saw them coming towards her from the main gate. She faked a smile in front of them and went in.
(you are free to imagine any actors for the groom and his family)
Leela welcomed them with great enthusiasm. Everyone greeted each other and exchanged a few words. Very soon the ceremony begun, the rings were exchanged and everyone seemed happy but Twinkle.
Mahi looked at her sister from time to time, she wondered if her elder sister would ever be happy.
After the ceremony was over and everyone went home Mahi looked out for Twinkle. She found her in her bedroom. Her eyes glued to the laptop screen. For the longest time Mahi had seen her sister like this. Workaholic and reserved. Although she clearly remembers their childhood days where Twinkle used to be a bubbly girl. But it seemed to have faded away with time. She never understood what made her dearest sister so gloomy and cold.
“di? You are here? And I have been looking for you everywhere” said Mahi entering the room in a haste. “for what? “ asked twinkle. Mahi was about to say something when Leela came in. “Mahi beta, why are you here at this hour? You should be sleeping by now. don’t you remember you have to go out with vikrant’s (the groom) mother tomorrow?” “yes, maa. I remember, I just wanted to have a quick chat with Di….”
”chats can wait, you should go now” interrupted Leela.
“you should go and rest now, I have some work to be completed. We shall talk later” said Twinkle.
Mahi left the room in disappointment. Leela followed her.
